Almost ten years ago we shot our first assignment for Boxing Ontario. Our first location for that shoot was McGrory’s gym and it was everything you would expect a boxing club to be. Shooting in the basement of an old community centre in a dark and dusty gym on Barton Street, it was a stereotype of boxing. And it was magical.
Back then we shot the assignment on 3200 ISO Kodak film pushing the exposure a full stop to really crank up the grain and grit in the final images. It was one of my favourite assignments that year.
Fast forward to four weeks ago and we were back it again. This time McGrory’s gym was located in a church basement. Still on Barton, still a stereotype of the sport. We spent hours documenting the boys, girls, men and women who were working out and training hard for a chance to get in to the ring. This time however we shot it on a Canon 1Dx with the help of studio lighting for dramatic effect and a little bit of Capture One magic to help pump up the contrast to give us some drama. Another magical shoot.
